Structural Insulated Panels

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) are pre-fabricated panels which are fitted onto a framework. SIPS consist of a thick layer of rigid insulating foam sandwiched between two outer strand boards. They have a high insulating value (R value), and a high strength to weight ratio. The R value measures the resistance of a material to heat flow, hence a high value means the material is a good insulator. Pipes and electrical cables are run through the middle foam layer.
Although the material cost of SIPS is slightly higher than for a traditional build it is offset by the speed and ease of construction. Apart from their insulating value the use of SIPS gives the added advantage of noise reduction.
