Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilation

Because modern homes are considerably more airtight than their older counterparts it is important that there is adequate ventilation. Insulated walls, airtight windows, caulking and sealing not only keep out draughts but trap stale air inside the building. Without ventilation there can be a build-up of contaminants such as dust, dander, spores, pollen, odors, household chemicals, and in some cases formaldehyde and radon.

Recovery ventilation is a system where stale air from inside the building is extracted and passed through a cleaner and exchanger unit. In heat recovery only heat is exchanged while in an energy recovery system both heat and water vapor are exchanged. The cleaned air together with fresh air is returned to the house. These systems can be customized to allow for ventilation only when necessary, always returning air at the correct temperature and humidity. Energy loss is therefore minimized because ventilation is controlled.
